Cedric Jones, an Oakland County road worker and father of six, was killed Wednesday after being struck by a motorist who was traveling the wrong way down a divided street in Farmington Hills, Fox 2 reports. Two other road crew workers were seriously injured, and the driver was taken to the hospital.
The incident is under investigation.
Fox 2 reports that shortly after 11 a.m., county road crews were doing basin repair work between 10 Mile and 11 Mile roads on Orchard Lake Road when the driver of a silver Ford Escape crossed the median and drove in the wrong direction, striking the workers.
Police said the crews had put up the proper precautions to ensure that motorists saw the road workers.
"It had appropriate emergency lights or warning lights and cones. Unfortunately, it looks like that vehicle—because it passed through the median—was able to strike those workers without any of that protective measure having any effect," said Chief John Piggottm, according to Fox 2.
