Detroit City Councilman Fred Durhal III, who lost in Tuesday's primary race for mayor, says he has been approached by people in politics and the community about running in the 12th Congressional District in 2026, for a seat currently held by Democrat Rashida Tlaib.

“People are floating my name around,” the 41-year-old told Deadline Detroit on Wednesday morning. “They’re approaching me to run for that seat, so I’ll always take everything under consideration. I leave nothing off the table.”

Durhal said he is not prepared to make an official announcement about his future.

“What I do know is that I’m not done serving the people of Detroit, no matter what capacity that’s in.”

He said he was spending time Wednesday analyzing Tuesday’s election. Durhal placed sixth among nine candidates in the mayoral race.

Durhal served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2015 to 2019 and joined the Detroit City Council in 2021.
