Security Guard Shoots and Wounds Man in Henry Ford St. John Hospital Parking Lot

A security officer Friday morning shot and wounded someone in the parking lot of Henry Ford St. John Hospital on Moross Road in Detroit, near the Grosse Pointe Woods border, the hospital said.

Henry Ford Health said the security officer was looking into reports of suspicious activity in the parking lot when someone fired shots at him, WXYZ reports. The hospital said the officer fired back, hitting one of the suspects.

The hospital issued a statement:

"Early this morning, someone opened fire on one of our officers at Henry Ford St. John Hospital while he was looking into reports of suspicious activity in our parking lot. Our officer fired back, hitting one of the suspects, who’s being treated at our hospital. Any questions about the remaining suspects or the investigation should be referred to authorities. The safety and wellbeing of our team members, patients and community is our top priority, and we are grateful our officer was unharmed.”

Michigan State Police posted a statement on social media:

The Detroit Regional Communication Center was contacted by Grosse Pointe Woods Police requesting assistance with a canine track and investigative assistance with a shooting investigation that occurred at St. John's Medical Center involving several suspects and the hospital security staff.

Detectives assigned to the Second District Special Investigation Section, canine units, Metro South troopers, evidence technicians and a crash reconstructionist are currently on scene at the hospital. Further information on the incident will come from the Grosse Pointe Woods Police Department.
